Australians protest with ‘vindaloo against violence’

AFP, February, 2010

MELBOURNE (AFP) Politicians, police and thousands of ordinary Australians sat down at Indian restaurants across the nation Wednesday for “Vindaloo Against Violence”, a mass dining protest against racial attacks.

More than 17,000 people registered to participate in the grassroots campaign, which went viral — and global — from humble beginnings as a 100-person event on social networking site Facebook.

Organiser Mia Northrop, 35, said she’d received event notifications from as far afield as Tajikistan, with people set to down a curry in Tokyo, Amsterdam, New York and Stockholm in solidarity with the cause.

“I’m really thrilled that this got the support that it did, there’s no way that I could have imagined it would end up to be this big,” Northrop, a digital media…

Since they are able to remove heavy odors from they air, they can make a previously undesirable space, like a smoking room, clean and pleasant to be in.

Air purifiers in the office also reduce utility costs by keeping the air conditioning coils clean and destratifying heated or cooled air. They are ideal for control rooms, laboratories, conference rooms, office areas, family rooms, recreational venues, hospitals and nursing home facilities. Also, because of their capacity to remove all types of odors, they are often used in hotel rooms, to deodorize meeting rooms and bathrooms and convert smoking rooms into non-smoking zones.

Air purifiers can be designed for individual rooms or for the whole office. You can even install an air-purifier or air-filtration system in the office heating or air conditioning unit.

Awards for Ten Tors youngsters

0 Comments | Plymouth Evening Herald, The, Jul 17, 2010

PUPILS at a city secondary school have been given awards for their performances in this year’s Ten Tors competition on Dartmoor.

The High Sheriff of Devon, Elizabeth d’Erlanger, presented awards to the pupils at Lipson Community College who took part in this year’s Ten Tors Jubilee Challenge.

The Challenge element of the annual Dartmoor hike is for young people who face physical challenges which inhibit them from taking part in the main Ten Tors event.

The awards were presented in a new mess tent which was donated to the school by Devon Crimebeat.

Lipson’s assistant principal Lynda Mctier said: “This is a massive achievement for these students who still undergo the same number of weeks of training and camping up on Dartmoor as the regular Ten Tors teams.”

Thousands of intrepid Plymouth youngsters trekked across open moorland for the 50th anniversary of Ten Tors in May. The Duke of Edinburgh, patron of the challenge, attended to mark the historic milestone.

Colin Norris: Leeds murder case nurse loses appeal

0 Comments | Yorkshire Evening Post (Leeds, England), Dec 21, 2009

> Colin Norris was not present for the ruling by Court of Appeal judges in London.

Norris, from Egilsay Terrace, Glasgow, was jailed for life in March last year after being convicted of killing the vulnerable women in 2002 by giving them massive doses of insulin while working at Leeds General Infirmary and St James’s Hospital.

He was convicted at Newcastle Crown Court of four counts of murder and one of attempted murder following a lengthy trial.

Lord Justice Aikens, sitting with two other judges, ruled today that his convictions were “safe”.

He announced that the case against Norris, 33, was “very strong indeed”.

Tsunami Waves have a

By admin July 28th, 2010, under Uncategorized

Tsunami Waves have a lot of power indeed. We saw just how much during the 2005 Christmas Sumatra Quake and Indonesia Tsunami. But the real power we did not see was the 400-mile per hour waves flowing underwater. Well that might be a very big deal if you were in a Submarine under the water and in the way of the Tsunami traveling at such speeds.

In fact if it hit you unaware and at the right angle it could put you into an unrecoverable situation like being in a flat spin in an aircraft too low to the ground to recovery in time. But in a Submarine, there is no way to bail out and you are at the mercy of a very violent Mother Nature Natural Disaster Event.

I propose an early warning system in our Military Submarines which would kick in an autopilot response, which would immediately re-align the direction of the submarine to hit the Tsunami massive under water flow head on, rather than taking a head shot or a rear shot which might disable the submarine.

Dive reef project begins to wallow.

Australasian Business Intelligence, May, 2002

May 28, 2002 (The Courier-Mail

ABIX via COMTEX) — Sunshine Coast politician, Peter Slipper, has criticised State Premier, Peter Beattie, over a plan to sink the “HMAS Brisbane” off the Sunshine Coast. Beattie originally embraced plans to sink the ship to create an artificial diving reef off the coast that would attract tourists. He has since refused to formalise a deal with the Australian Government, and now says it would be better to save the ship and turn it into a Brisbane museum site. Slipper says Beattie’s change of heart could see the Federal Government give the ship to another state

By admin July 28th, 2010, under Uncategorized

This inverter takes the DC voltage from a battery, like a heavy duty car battery and converts that into an appropriate AC voltage. Such supplies are limited because of the capacity of the battery capability and depending upon the battery the ampere-hour of the output can be increased, resulting in longer period of operation. The battery will need charging once it discharges.

There are variable transformers, which are known as Variacs. The principle is that the output voltage of this transformer can be manually varied with a fixed voltage as its input. For example, with a 110 Volt AC supply at the input, you can vary the output voltage from 0 to 110 Volts AC. The typical applications of these transformers are in testing devices for its lower and higher input voltage operation levels, quality control in testing equipment in burn-in condition, temperature and lighting control, etc.

Transformers are essential devices to operate any electrical or electronic equipment.

Sewanee without Character for football home opener

0 Comments | Chattanooga Times Free Press, Sep 19, 2009

The Sewanee football team (0-1) will host Hampden-Sydney (2-0) at 2:30 p.m. EDT today. Sewanee’s Tigers won the last meeting in 2006, evening the all-time series at 23-23, but went 2-8 while the Virginia-based Tigers were 8-2 in 2008. Sewanee must play without its all-conference defensive lineman, Jeremy Character, who injured a knee ligament in last week’s loss at Washington and Lee. Sewanee’s defensive line is an area of extensive experience and decent depth, at least, according to coach Robert Black. “It’s a nonsurgical deal and we think we’ll get him back this year, but it won’t be this weekend,” Black said Friday evening. “We can’t replace that big guy, but other guys will get more time and have more opportunities.” One W&L defensive end made two interceptions, returning one for a touchdown, forced a fumble and sacked Sewanee’s starting quarterback in the first 17 minutes last week, putting the Tigers in an early hole, but Black feels his team can challenge Hampden-Sydney. “They’re a fine football team and we have great respect for them, but I expect us to be in a dogfight with them and have a chance to win in the fourth quarter. I believe we’re going to have a lot of close games this year, and I think this will be one of them. We’ll just get to the fourth quarter and see what happens.” The visitors have a fifth-year senior at quarterback and “throw the ball 70 percent of the time,” Black noted, so rain today could be a proverbial “equalizer” even though it would “create some challenges for both teams,” he said.

* The Chattanooga Steam will host the Georgia Xtreme at 7 tonight at the Washington Hills Recreation Center for the United South Football League North Conference championship. The winner will play next weekend in Atlanta for the overall USFL title. Admission costs $7; ages 12 and under get in free. The Steam are 10-1 in USFL play, 22-2 overall counting their run to the Deep South championship. They beat the Georgia Renegades 14-7 last Saturday. The Xtreme (11-1), who were ranked No. 1 by Minor League Football News earlier this year, still are 17th and beat the Georgia Bulldogs 35-15 last week. The Steam are ranked 27th.

SOCCER

* The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga’s 4-0 women’s soccer team will host Austin Peay at 2 p.m. Sunday at the North River Soccer Complex. There is no admission charge. UTC has yet to give up a goal, and only four other NCAA Division I women’s teams went into the weekend at least 4-0 with no scores allowed. Another win would equal the Lady Mocs’ total for the 2008 season, and the visiting Lady Govs are 1-6-1 after losing Friday night to Middle Tennessee. They have been shut out six times. Sophomore Sara Kluttz from Ooltewah has started every game for Austin Peay, and sophomore Lydia Gennett from Hixson plays regularly as a reserve. Freshman Becca Smith and sophomore Donna-Kay Henry have scored five and four goals for UTC. Sunday will be Fan Appreciation Day with festivities starting an hour before game time; the Lady Mocs will be available for autographs after the contest.

* The Bryan College soccer doubleheader scheduled for this evening in Dayton against AAC foe Milligan has been postponed for weather considerations to Monday. The women’s game still will start at 5 p.m., followed at about 7:30 by the men’s matchup.

BASEBALL

* The Chattanooga Lookouts were nominated by the Southern League for Minor League Baseball’s annual Larry MacPhail Award for most outstanding promotional work during a season.

CROSS COUNTRY

* TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Just before rain and lightning chased all the competitors from the Harry Pritchett Race Course, the UTC women’s cross country team finished sixth and the men’s team finished eighth out of 16 teams Friday evening in Alabama’s Crimson Classic. The Mocs’ Emmanuel Kirwa was eighth individually in 25:26.70 for the 8k, and freshman Kyle McLarty was 17th in 25.59.80. Anneli Uys led the Lady Mocs with an 11th-place 18:05.20 in the 5k, and Heather Stuive was 20th
